A slight difference in the size of breasts is common and not at all abnormal. However, if significant asymmetry in size and shape between the two opposing breasts is present, it is anisomastia.
Anisomastia usually creates an aesthetic issue that can lead to adverse psychological effects for young adolescents. For this reason, surgical correction of the breasts to achieve symmetry is necessary.
In any given case, the technique used to resolve anisomastia will be unique. It may involve placing a prosthesis in one breast, in combination with mastopexy or breast reduction in the other, while in some cases, it is also necessary to place prostheses of different volumes in both breasts. Intervention in the mammary glands may also be required in some cases to achieve the desired and appropriate shape. The operation may therefore involve various combinations of lifting, reduction, and augmentation of the breasts, with or without modification of the mammary glands.
